From Reading Slump to Literary Revival: How Audiobooks and Genre-Switching Saved My Reading Life

We've all been there. That dreaded reading slump where books sit untouched, your Goodreads challenge mocks you from afar, and your TBR pile grows exponentially while your actual reading time withers away. That's exactly where I found myself recently, particularly with my beloved romance novels that had previously been my literary comfort food.
The Audiobook Lifeline
After weeks of struggling to finish anything, I discovered that changing how I consumed stories made all the difference. Audiobooks became my unexpected savior, offering a way to immerse myself in narratives even when my eyes and mind refused to cooperate with traditional reading.
The beauty of audiobooks lies in their versatility—I could "read" while doing mundane tasks, during my commute, or when my eyes were simply too tired to focus on printed pages. This shift in medium sparked joy in storytelling again.
Genre-Hopping as Reading Therapy
Equally important was my decision to temporarily step away from romance, my usual literary home. As much as I adore the genre, sometimes familiarity breeds, if not contempt, at least a certain weariness.
By venturing into different literary territories, I rediscovered the excitement of unpredictable narratives and fresh perspectives. This literary palate cleanser proved exactly what my reading life needed.
Current Listens That Broke The Slump
My audio journey has led me to some remarkable titles:
- The Buffalo Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones—a masterful blend of horror and Indigenous storytelling that kept me riveted in ways completely different from my usual reads.
- Hitting A Straight Lick With A Crooked Stick by Zora Neale Hurston—rediscovering this literary giant through audio has been a revelation, with her vivid language and cultural insights coming alive through narration.
- Joy Bomb by Tauren Wells—an inspirational listen that offers perspective and positivity when I need it most.
- Ask A Matchmaker by Maria Avgitidis—fascinating insights into relationships from a completely different angle than fictional romance.
In Praise of Libro.fm
I can't discuss my audiobook revival without mentioning Libro.fm and their ALC (Audiobook Listening Copy) programs for influencers and booksellers. Their platform has not only provided access to amazing titles but also supports independent bookstores in the process—a win-win for readers and the literary community.
For anyone stuck in their own reading rut, I highly recommend trying the audiobook approach and venturing outside your go-to genres. Sometimes, the path back to reading joy requires a slight detour—and possibly a good pair of headphones.
