Review: Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Audiobook)

5 stars

Hey folks, not gonna lie, I'm a total horror newbie! So when I got my hands on this book, I was a bit apprehensive. But with the chills of fall creeping in and Halloween around the corner, I thought, why not? It's a blend of Lovecraftian horror, cinema vibes, and Mexican history - perfect for us scaredy cats!

Moreno-Garcia weaves a tale that's not just about magic but also touches on heavy topics like Nazism, racism, and classism. It's a bold statement that magic isn't just for the privileged few. The main baddie Ewers is like those colonizers who stole indigenous practices and twisted them for their own gains.

The story revolves around Montserrat and Tristán battling forces they accidentally awaken with Abel. It took me a while to get through it (I'm an easily distracted audiobook reader), but it was worth it! The start may be slow, but once our heroes meet Abel Urueta, things really heat up.

Montserrat is a badass heroine who doesn't take nonsense from anyone - totally refreshing! Her dynamic with Tristán is intriguing and slightly codependent on his part.

So if you're dipping your toes into the horror genre like me or looking for something fresh to read, give this one a go! But if you're into fast-paced gory stuff, this might not be your cup of tea.

Also got my copies of Mexican Gothic and Certain Dark Things lined up next, thanks to this book! Big shout out to Libro.fm for the ALC!

Thanks for sharing this review. Silver Nitrate sounds like an intriguing audiobook, especially with its mix of horror, mystery, and historical elements. I think audiobooks can make immersive stories even more engaging when the narration matches the atmosphere. I’d be interested to hear whether the ending lived up to your expectations without giving away spoilers. The audiobook review of Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia really highlights how immersive storytelling can feel when the narration matches the tone of the book well. I think audiobooks are a great way to experience fiction differently, especially for atmospheric stories like this one. It also got me thinking about building a stronger online presence as a writer, so I’ve been looking into author website development. Has anyone here created a site to showcase their books and reading updates effectively?
